From palaces and parks to lesser known but equally intriguing attractions, this part of west London has it all. The river provides its special air of tranquillity; yet major road links whisk you in and out of town when required. Journey times from nearby Syon Lane station to London Waterloo can be achieved in as little as 33 minutes.
Whatever you feel like doing here, you can. Explore grand gardens and history at Kew, Syon Park, and Marble Hill: the aristocratic landowners of bygone days certainly recognised choice locations for their country retreats. Long stretches of the riverbank are edged by footpaths; it’s possible to walk almost all the way from Kew to Twickenham. You can ride, walk and picnic in the huge expanses of Richmond Park, or get to know Old Isleworth, a riverside village with a surprising range of restaurants and pubs.
